Camp Elsewhere: A Summer Program for Adolescents with Eating DisordersDepartment of Pediatrics, BC Children's Hospital, tonkiaah{at}islandnet.com An innovative summer camping program involving 77 eating-disordered adolescents and their families was established in western Canada. It operated for eight years and a retrospective evaluation was undertaken during the eighth year. The program proved safe, had high camper-parent acceptance and was perceived by campers and parents as having contributed to the process of clinical recovery. This paper describes the nature of the program, provides illustrative case information and details the strengths and limitations identified over this eight-year experiment in alternative forms of treatment.
