Something Happens: Elements of Therapeutic ChangeWhittington Hospital, UK To make a difference therapists need a theory with which to understand the patient.1 They choose theories that suit them, and need technique to maintain the therapeutic setting. Psychotherapy developed from healing and medicine, and from our ethological heritage of care for dependants. It happens in a special setting which makes new experiences possible. In this article I list a number of ingredients that are necessary in any effective psychotherapy.
