Peter J. Tayler

Newcastle General Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

The diagnosis of psychiatric disorder in adolescence is often difficult. Three cases of adolescent onset bipolar affective psychosis are described, where disorientation and impairment of short-term memory were part of the presenting psychopathology. This led to extensive investigation for an organic cause. It was only after a period of weeks that the final diagnosis of bipolar disorder was firmly made.

Key Words: adolescence • bipolar affective disorder • case reports • diagnostic difficulties • unusual presentations
