Homosexuality is initially set in its context of the DSM and ICD classifications, and the definitions of sexual orientation and identity are considered. The fluidity of sexuality and homophobia are discussed, along with how they may affect any clinical intervention. Aetiologies of a homosexual orientation are then considered, along with whether such research has any clinical relevance. Finally, the coming out process is considered, with developmental models acting to provide a framework for assessment and intervention.
