A Group-Work Approach to Addressing Friendship Issues in the Treatment of Adolescents with Eating DisordersThe Phoenix Centre, Cambridge, UKsarah.davies{at}cambsmh.nhs.uk People with eating disorders often have some associated social difficulties. Given that friendships are of particular importance during adolescence, and that maintaining friendships during in-patient admission seems to aid the process of rehabilitation, there is a need for interventions that address friendship issues to form part of in-patient treatment programmes for adolescents with eating disorders. A group-work approach has been identified to address friendship issues within this context. The rationale for a Friends Group, key elements of the group and related issues are discussed. Patients experiences are reported and case examples provided to illustrate the function and value of the group.
